Milan

Italy the land built on culture excellent architecture exceptional food and even better fashion. If you haven't been to Milan, I urge you now is the time to go with the summer holidays rapidly approaching, it's time to start thinking about a short city break that will prepare for this summers activities. Milan is a metropolitan city based in the north of Italy. The weather is consistent which provides a nice break from the UK.

Food & Culture

As you know Italians are known for there culinary skills, in the streets of Milan, you can find quality fresh food served alfresco style, without the tourist prices. Without realising I had actually booked my hotel in Chinatown, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise, it was situated to all the local amenities and transport links. Everything was a stone throw away, which allowed me to explore the city on foot. Much like Amsterdam, the locals use bicycles to go almost everywhere. Alongside this the citizens of Milan lead an incredibly active lifestyle, I mean why wouldn't you so much great parks and arches to run through. Another quaint feature is the old orient express style trams that pass through the cities, get the right shot and it looks like something out of a movie. As you can imagine people are incredibly stylish, 3 piece suits with trainers are a thing, sounds strange but look's ultra modern and sophisticated.

Duomo Cathedral

This is a must visit, if you can't do anything else, visit this cathedral, when you get there you will understand why. This is Italian Architecture at it's finest, I stood there with my mouth open with awe. The detail of each sculpture and the materials used are out of this world. It's one of the largest cathedrals in the world and took over 6 centuries to build.

Cimitero Monumentale di Milano

This is more of an unusual tourist attraction but by far my favourite. I would never pick a cemetery as a must see but the architecture, and the expanse of land is simply breathtaking. The outside of the building looks like a normal cathedral but has a very peaceful quality about it, I was lucky enough to visit when the bells were ringing, which I found incredibly relaxing. I can only describe the tombs as elaborate architecture gone wild, the cemetery even had a lovely elderly groundskeeper giving voluntary tours of the best tombs to look at, all in Italian of course.
